When we were dating, my husband once told me I didn’t have any tenacity. I knew right then he didn’t know me very well. I still married him—and I proved him wrong.

If it’s something I have passion for, I don’t give up. In our 32 years of marriage, there have been plenty of times I could have walked away from our businesses and gone to work for someone else. But once I make a commitment, to me there is no going back. I just pivot and figure out a new way.

Not everything I’ve tried has worked. And life has thrown us plenty of challenges—the economy, covid, caregiving for family, and even navigating our son’s mental health diagnosis. Those are the moments that could have stopped me. But instead, they became the reason I kept going.

Because working for someone else would mean asking for time off for every therapy appointment, every doctor’s visit, every unexpected emergency. Running my own business means that even on the days I’m driving all over town for others, some income still flows in. And that’s why I’ll never give up on me, us, or my family.
