1st May is celebrated as Labour Day. And to pay tribute to the Labours all over the world, Swatantra Film's' Award winning Film , Labour Pain an unending saga is set to release on YouTube so that it reaches maximum viewers. Initially this film was released on OTT platforms like Airtel Xtreme, Vodafone Idea, Hungama Channel.
Labours lay the groundwork of our societies, they are the pillars on which our sky scrapers stand. Their blood, sweat & tears shape our homes, malls & subways. But which strata of our social fabric do these labourers dwell in? What about their individual identities?
The idea emerged and the film actually started during the covid -19 lockdown. We were distributing free food packets to the metro workers in Pune.Observing the real plight of the labourers during such time we felt the need to document the struggle weaving it into a story which was featured on the News channel in the Covid Report. I strongly feel that we as filmmakers, Theatre makers should document this International Crisis in the way we can so that the next generation is aware about such episodes that have occurred around them in the past. While the administration, police, doctors were contributing in their own way, it was the creative fraternity who could document the ground realities.
Then Hunt for cinematographer and other technical personnel was carried out but it was obviously very difficult to get it all together and work. Thus the film was started with only 4-6 theatre actors and technical departments were also looked at by theatre practitioners, like how one member from the troupe took up the responsibility of cinematography, other one took care of costumes and makeup, doing recky , art work etc and slowly slowly a team of 72 actors/members from the our theatre only got together who not only acted but took care various departments of the film.
We follow the story of Shankar and Manju, daily wage migrant workers, living miles away from home for work that to them is worship. Our journey with them brings us to the apocalyptic days of an un-foreseen pandemic that upends the lives of millions like them. Without a social security net to catch their fall and be abandoned by the city they built, left to their own devices, they begin a long, long walk back home. Will they ever get there ? Will they find the families that a home is made of ? Will they ever dare to dream or hope again for a better future ? Or are they on roads that lead nowhere ?
