Despite covering a relatively short number of years, the period covering the English Civil War and the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell (and his son), saw a huge amount of upheaval and unrest. The religious disquiet of the political divides sewn during the Reformation in the previous century under the Tudors contributed a great deal to this. But the growing discontent with the impetuous Charles I had catastrophic consequences for both him and the monarchy.

The English Civil War actually comprised of 3 wars, and involved Scotland and Ireland as well as England. We have only had time to cover up to and including the first one, as there is so much information. We can definitely continue this another time!

Mike has been writing for the defence press and history magazines since the 1980's. His articles have appeared in many magazines and newspapers including a monthly article on the medieval history of his home town, Northampton for the NeneQuirer magazine. Other articles have been published in Medieval Warfare Magazine and the Battlefields Trust Magazine - Battlefield.
