"Where Did You Sleep Last Night" or "In The Pines" is a century-old tune known by many names and played in what seems like endless variations. The song is loosely concerning a mix of murder, trains, runaways, adultery and depression. The song had successfully passed in the oral tradition, becoming a well-known tune for both bluegrass hero Bill Monroe and blues legend Lead Belly. Kurt and Krist first played it on Mark Lanegan’s 1990 solo album The Winding Sheet, and later they would do their own version. And what a version it was to become! Nirvana's version from MTV Unplugged builds from a sentimental brood to implacable frenzy. A perfect and tragic endpoint.
