This is the second part of our feature presentation on the upcoming electric cars from Korea. In this video, we focus on the crossovers. Crossovers are undoubtedly the most popular automotive segment and it continues to grow. In fact, as of January 2021, the sale of crossovers now has reached 50% of all cars sold in the US. In particular, for Kia, which has set a sales record in 2020, 62 % of that total came from the Sedona, Seltos, Sorento, Soul, Sportage, and Telluride, up 58 percent from the previous year. The situation is no different for Hyundai, as Hyundai’s popular crossovers such as Palisade, Santa Fe, and Tucson helped the set sales record for the Korean company, posting the highest market share in seven years with 8.4%. With Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand having introduced its first crossover models GV80 and GV70, along with the release of the all-new models such as Kia Sorento, Hyundai Tucson, and Santa Cruz, the Korean auto giant is expected to break 10% market share by the end of 2021.
So, naturally, it wouldn’t be surprising to know that Koreans are preparing for the full electric age with the lineup of crossovers to continue on with the success that they are enjoying with the current ICE models.
In this issue, we will feature a couple of compact crossover models that are being planned to be introduced within the next 2-3 years in preparation for the transition into the full-electric automotive era, which is expected to start in 2030.
