This week on 'Resilience: Historic Houses of India and Their Custodians', the Centre for Historic Houses at the Jindal Global University brings to you the Taj Lake Palace, introduced to us by Prince Lakshyaraj Singh Ji Mewar of Udaipur, Dr. Dipti Khera, K Mohanchandran and Diederik Six.
Prince Lakshyaraj Singh Ji Mewar presents the third generation of hospitality professionals from the illustrious House of Mewar, each of whom has contributed to Udaipur’s emergence as one of the ‘Top 15 Cities of the World’ and the HRH Group of Hotels as India's largest chain of palace-hotels and sanctuary-resorts under private ownership.
Besides his interest in heritage and hospitality, Lakshyaraj Singh is deeply involved with several developmental works and the growth of Maharana Mewar Public School. Recognizing his contribution to the sector of development, he received the 7th Bharat Gaurav Award at the UK House of Commons for being a source of inspiration to the youth of the country. Over the years he has been facilitated by FHRAI, received MICE awards, National Tourism Awards, and commemorative awards for the extensive philanthropic work that he undertakes.
Dipti Khera
Dipti Khera earned her Ph.D. in South Asian art history from Columbia University's Department of Art History and Archaeology, completing a dissertation titled “Picturing India’s ‘Land of Kings’ Between the Mughal and British Empires: Topographical Imaginings of Udaipur and its Environs.” She holds M.A.’s in Art History and Archaeology as well as Museum Anthropology from Columbia University, an M.A. with Distinction in South Asian Design and Architecture from De Montfort University (Leicester, U.K.), and a B.A. in Architecture from Sir J. J. College of Architecture (Mumbai, India). Dr. Khera’s research interests lie in the art and urban topography of Rajasthan between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, including painted scrolls, large-scale paintings, maps, and drawings; intellectual thinking on the experience of urban spaces and the consumption of material things in early modern South Asia; long eighteenth century in South Asia; historiography of cross-cultural encounters in art; design, decorative arts, and art education in colonial India; modern architecture and comparative urbanism; and contemporary heritage landscapes.
K Mohanchandran
With over 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Mohanchandran’s strength lies in his thorough knowledge of the industry. With an outstanding reputation in establishing personal connections with guests and associates alike, Mohan’s approach to work has always been praiseworthy. He embarked on his journey with the Taj Group in 1989 and has been an integral part of the Taj legacy ever since. He is currently the Area Director Udaipur & Jodhpur for Taj and General Manager of the renowned Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur. An alumnus of the Institute of Hotel Management, Pusa, New Delhi, he has worked across all hotel functions and in multiple locations with the Taj Group - including Chennai, Aurangabad, New Delhi, Dubai, Mumbai, Udaipur, Sydney, and lately Hyderabad. An avid reader, his interests include Medieval and Indian History, the books of John Steinbeck, travel and food, and listening to a wide range of music, spanning the classical and contemporary genres, with a special place in his collection for West African music.
