BREAKING: Sonam Wangchuk Arrested Amid Violent Protests In Ladakh

Sonam Wangchuk, the well-known Ladakh activist, was arrested on September 26, 2025, following a wave of violent protests in the region that left four people dead and dozens injured. The government accused him of making provocative statements that allegedly incited a mob and led to unrest, with Wangchuk's hunger strike and references to Arab Spring-style demonstrations cited as contributing factors. While the Centre said he failed to control the protesting crowds, Wangchuk has maintained that he consistently called for peace in both Ladakhi and Hindi and dismissed the accusations as attempts to scapegoat him for widespread frustration among Ladakh’s youth and citizens.

Alongside the arrest, authorities revoked the FCRA certificate of Wangchuk's NGO and launched investigations into alleged financial irregularities and improper foreign funding linked to his organization. Wangchuk responded that he is prepared for incarceration, warning that his arrest may only heighten public awareness of Ladakh's demands for statehood and constitutional safeguards. He argued that blaming activists will not resolve the underlying problems facing Ladakh, calling for wisdom and meaningful dialogue instead of repressive tactics by the government.
