On Woody’s 50th birthday, in the middle of the pandemic lockdown, his wife gave him the ultimate gift: a 1953 Fender Telecaster once owned by the legendary Bob Bain, the Excalibur of guitars. Nicknamed “The Gunn,” this iconic guitar is one of the most recorded instruments in Hollywood history. Its unmistakable tone can be heard on countless soundtracks and TV themes from the 1950s and ’60s - including “Peter Gunn,” “Batman,” and “Bonanza,” as well as films like Charade, Days of Wine and Roses, Experiment in Terror, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and The Pink Panther. Bain also played it nightly as part of The Tonight Show band during the early Johnny Carson era.
Before arranging the Trilogy series, Jackson reached out to fellow sonic explorer Bill Frisell. Both are musical torchbearers, deeply rooted in the past while forever looking ahead. Woody traveled from Tucson to New York City, meeting Bill, Jay Bellerose, and Jen Condos at Sear Sound. Upon arrival, Bill asked, “Do you have the guitar?” Woody handed him “The Gunn,” and the sessions began.
Jackson later shaped the recordings into three distinct sonic chapters. The first, Cowboy Yoga, is ambient, uplifting, and full of quiet hope. The second, Way Out West, picks up the conceptual thread - a record he had started before his detour into film and video game work.
