Checking the dial for radioactivity.
I pay a visit to my friend Mike, who has considerable experience with nuclear physics and working with radiation and radioactive materials.
He uses an instrument known as a Geiger Counter to check the clock dials and we even compare the dials with rocks and Coleman lamp mantles.
As you can see several items are “hotter” than the clock dials are.
Mike’s advice for safe handling of the hands and dials is to not eat them. This would also mean being careful to not inhale any dust generated by the flaking paint.
