Nearly a year after completing the project, it is finally making its full debut today. The question arises: was it a failure, or did we manage to pivot effectively to achieve our dream garden beds? In my opinion, it was a success. Would I consider us professionals? No. We had some experience with blocks and stucco in the past, but creating a garden bed was a learning process for sure. I don’t think we fully grasped all the techniques until the final garden bed; it was only at that point that we felt more confident & really understood the improvements we could have made. I am convinced that our fourth or fifth garden bed would have been flawless LOL I hope our lessons learned will benefit your future projects.

Oh..what can I say about stucco?! QUITE A LOT. I don’t think I even shared half of the knowledge tucked in my mind palace. Stucco can involve a 1- or 3-part process, depending on the brand or materials. Here is the two-part method we used: 1. Scratch & Brown Coat; 2. Smooth Stucco Color Coat Finish. I hope the details I do share help you along the way.

Tips
• Always mist the blocks before adding your coat. And mist after while drying so that it doesn’t crack with the heat and cures slower especially on a hot day.

• Start any coat process with the tops first, then the sidewalls (applying the scratch & brown and the stucco coat).

• Apply each coat in an upward motion from bottom to top. Load your trowel with enough mix for a single, smooth application. This ensures even and level coats. Insufficient product on the trowel can lead to unevenness.

• Do not place any of the stucco process on the inside block walls, or keep it above the soil level.
