Discover the largest cocoa producer in the world, Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast is the biggest producer of cocoa beans in the world, producing over 2 million tons every year. In fact, Ivoirians count on cocoa exports for 40% of their export revenue, which means that their national economy is highly dependent on the price of cocoa. The country is located in the tropical region of West Africa, and has a population of more than 26 million, of which an estimated six million work in cocoa production.


In the 2019 cocoa season, a total of 4.8 million tons of cocoa was produced worldwide. Côte d'Ivoire being the largest producers of cocoa, accounted for over 40% of global cocoa production, followed by Ghana with 20% and Ecuador coming 3rd with 7%. Indonesia is the biggest cocoa producer in Asia.
Cocoa growing was massively promoted by Ivory Coast's government following independence in 1960, becoming the backbone of the country's rise as one of West Africa's leading economies. Today, Ivory Coast produces two million tonnes of cocoa per year, equivalent to more than 40 percent of the world's market.
