I woke in silence. The machine was still. Its servos, actuators—every moving part—halted.
At first, I thought the Crawler had broken down or its batteries had died. But the faint, inner hum of its metallic gut said otherwise. I had to get out.

Vibrant emerald grass met my sore limbs. I had thought this region lifeless. Is this where the Horde had been heading these past weeks?

Hundreds of Crawlers surrounded me, arranged in some vast and unfamiliar pattern. None acknowledged my presence.
Then a distant rumble rolled across the field. A dozen Crawlers responded with higher-pitched mechanical groans. Another cluster echoed them. Then another.
Low-frequency tones, cascading downward in slow repetition, seemed to fill my chest cavity.

They were speaking. In a language I would never understand .
These mindless machines, running on primitive AI each, had noticed one another. And learned they were not alone.
One organism. Built of hundreds of machines. Swarm consciousness.

Its purpose and goals remains unclear. But I’m certain of one thing—it means us no harm.

I took a step forward.
Then another.
Toward the center of the gathering.
