Buckskin Gulch flash flood survivor recounts rescue; encourages preparedness

BIG WATER, Utah (KUTV) — After losing two friends in a Kane County flash flood in mid-March, Ed Smith is focusing on the heroic efforts from Utah first responders.

Smith was hiking a route from Wire Pass to Lee’s Ferry in the popular 40-plus mile Buckskin Gulch. Smith was with two others, Jeff Watson and Bill Romaniello. According to Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the trio planned to leave on Friday and reach their destination on Sunday, but Smith said they were hit with a flash flood early Saturday.

“You know, you can't dwell on it,” said Smith. “It was a major tragedy for two very close friends that that I considered brothers of mine.”
