The Indian Union, from the time of independence from British colonial rule, 1947, until now, has undergone shifts in the trajectory of economy.

One of these transitions was a ‘green revolution’ in farming that occurred in the 1970s.

After the Independence there was a economic boom as the government allowed the businesses to expand across the nation.

small businesses got bigger and an industrial size bakery could now sell its goods across the nation,

by centralizing its production, it would bake bread cheaper than your local baker

these economies of scale led entire industries to consolidate

Town suddenly saw their local grain mills, slaughterhouses,

shops, dairies and bakeries vanish one by one.

Now there's no difference between supermarket in cities like Mumbai or Bangalore or Delhi and our culture is poorer for it

we need a new plan in this country, to recover what's been lost

we need networks of farms, highly local distribution channels, and motivated consumers

And instead of economies of scale we need economies of community

When communities support local food producers, distributors and consumers

They're helping to restore local food systems, one farm and one consumer at a time

Economies of community a way to build healthy local food systems
