Parts of India Experience Warmest April on Record; At Least Nine Killed in Heatwave So Far

Eastern India endured its hottest April on record as a heatwave swept through during a general election, claiming at least nine lives. The weather office predicted above-normal temperatures for May as well. April saw the average temperature in eastern India reach 28.12 Celsius, the warmest since records began in 1901, partly attributed to the El Nino weather pattern. West Bengal recorded the highest number of heatwave days in April in the last 15 years, followed by Odisha, where conditions were the most severe in nine years. The scorching heat has been cited as a factor contributing to low voter turnout in the ongoing parliamentary election, with results expected on June 4. However, forecasters anticipate a gradual easing of heatwave conditions in the coming days.
