On this episode of Business 24, the focus is on a sector which contributes 48 percent of Nigeria's GDP, talk of 'small and medium enterprise' - SME - the backbone of world's major economies.

International organizations such as the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, the United Nations and the European Union among others; agree that small and medium-sized enterprises / businesses are concerns whose number of personnel fall below certain limits. In the European Union for instance, the most frequent upper limit designating an SME is 250 employees.

SMEs play an essential role in the economy of a country. They represent a source of entrepreneurship abilities, innovation and creation of new jobs. Their capacity to apply, adapt and disseminate new technology is unique.

In Nigeria, small and medium enterprises account for 96 percent of businesses and 84 percent of employment in the country; while accounting for about 50 percent of industrial jobs and nearly 90 percent of the manufacturing sector, in terms of number of enterprises, according to the National Bureau of Statistics - NBS
