Zackie Achmat is a political activist, co-founder of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), and current director of the activist group Ndifuna Ukwazi.

He delivered the plenary speech at the conference of the Canon Collins Educational & Legal Assistance Trust, an organisation that supports individuals and organisations to build an open and just society in southern Africa. At the annual scholars’ conference in 2015, scholars, experts and activists from civil society and academia came together to discuss their research, debate pressing issues in southern Africa, and build and strengthen networks within the Trust community.
