Below is the 4-step formula for hero ascension to take a hero to the gold level:

Step (1):
1 Blue shard (of the hero you are wanting to ascend) +
2 Blue shards (any hero in the same fraction - typically burn heroes) =
1 Purple shard [Do this four times]

Step (2):
Combine 2 Purple shards (the hero you are ascending from step 1) =
1 Orange shard [Do this twice]

Step (3):
1 Orange shard (the hero you are ascending - from step 2) +
2 Orange shards (any hero in the same fraction - typically burn heroes) =
1 Red shard

Step (4):
1 Red shard (the hero you are ascending - from step 3) +
1 Orange shard (from step 2) =
1 Gold shard
