No, student loan debt can not be partially forgiven or reduced through Chapter 13. While you can include student loan debt in your Chapter 13 bankruptcy plan, you will still ultimately owe the full amount.

You see, while you are in Chapter 13 bankruptcy, payments are no longer made directly to the student loan lender, but to a bankruptcy trustee. The trustee assigned to your case takes your monthly payment and distributes it to your creditors according to the percentage agreed on in the repayment plan.

The percentage paid to your student loan lender through Chapter 13 bankruptcy may be lower than what you were paying them prior to filing.

However, after the five-year repayment plan is finished, you will still need to pay back whatever is left of your loan.
