Scientists Discover Liquid Water Reservoir Deep Inside Surface of Mars

Scientists have discovered a reservoir of liquid water deep within the rocky outer crust of Mars, according to a new analysis of data from NASA’s Mars Insight Lander. The lander, which arrived on Mars in 2018, was equipped with a seismometer that monitored vibrations and Mars quakes for four years. By examining these seismic signals, researchers identified evidence of liquid water for the first time on the Red Planet. These findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The Insight mission, which concluded in December 2022, spent its operational time listening to the planet's seismic activity and recorded over 1,319 quakes during its mission.
