The highest peak in San Marino, Monte Titano, is home to three hilltop fortresses known as the Three Towers of San Marino. These towers are located on the three peaks of the mountain and are considered to be the most famous landmarks of San Marino. The oldest and most famous fortress among the three is called Guaita. Both the national flag and coat of arms of San Marino depict these fortresses, which have been standing since the 13th century. In 2008, Monte Titano and the historic center of San Marino were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List for their exceptional testimony of the establishment of a representative democracy based on civic autonomy and self-governance
