Pruning is a skill, an art, and often a necessity. Do it. Rhododendrons will bounce back so go for it. This client went farther than I thought she would and that is fine! Keep in mind that after this kind of dramatic pruning there will likely not be blooms on there next spring but that’s ok. It wasn't that healthy anyway and no pain, no gain.

This type of major pruning will allow the plant to put its energy into creating new growth instead of trying to sustain the leggy branches that are going in undesirable directions. Fall is the best time to prune these but do it when you have time. We're not looking for perfection here--just get out there and do the best you can.
