I came across this Shaun Baxter study about targeting! Targeting is a way of using the chromatic scale, you target a note (or a set of notes, for example the notes of an arpeggio) and resolve on it by its leading note (placed a semitone below) chromatically ascending, or also combining diatonic or chromatic tones close but higher than the chosen note, there is a variety of vocabulary! You can find it in classical music and jazz, Shaun's example is of a neoclassical metal style, really well done!
