With wonderful humility and humor, Joe Evermore and his 11-year-old son Sam Adventure Evermore share their incredible journey and some of the adventures of the Evermore family as Joe and his wife Ann intentionally raise four boys (Sam Adventure, Sylvan Lightyear, Joey Danger, and Blaze Wilder) to be courageous men.

Sam Adventure begins by talking about his experience climbing the sheer face of El Capitan in Yosemite at the age of 8, making him the youngest person ever to climb that face. He explains that an adventure requires something unexpected that is hard and scary and usually starts when something goes wrong. Sam describes an unexpected, hard, and scary nighttime adventure on El Capitan.

Joe shares the parenting philosophies that drive the Evermore family journey. He notes that most cultures have a designed path to manhood--how a man becomes a man. The Evermores believe that there must come a point in a boy's life when his mother releases him to the world of men.

Joe than shares the unique path to manhood that he and his wife are following with their boys, careful to emphasize that any family's path to masculine formation must be genuine to the father. Climbing happens to be the Evermore path. Joe emphasizes that intentionality by a father bestows identity on children, both boys and girls.

When one of their boys turns 5, they take him on a climb up Pingora Peak in Wyoming, with the older boys helping to bring up the younger.

Starting at age 5, a boy must come up with one "absolutely colossal goal" each year. Joe explains the three requirements for a goal, including "You can't die".

The first stage of development involves helping them self-regulate when facing challenges. They do this by architecting environments for the boys to self-regulate and find deep courage.

On the path, a father's quantity of time is more important than quality of time because it is time with their father that forms boys into men.

They celebrate what the boys have earned and who they are becoming.

Joe then describes his and Sam's attempt to climb the Matterhorn, including the extensive preparation and the difficulty and importance of turning back with just 1,200 feet to go because they missed a time cutoff by only five minutes.

With tremendous transparency, Joe shares the adventure with their only daughter, Ember Moonlight. Joe explains that when they learned she would not survive long outside the womb, the family decided to put life on hold and take Ember--still in the womb--on a road trip up all the mountains they had planned for her to climb. Joe reveals the profound spiritual impact Ember had on their family, even though she lived outside the womb for only 1 hour and 6 minutes, describing it as if God descended into their life and was sad with them. It resulted in the Baker family becoming the Evermore family and celebrating Christmas in October.

Joe concludes by describing a film project they are undertaking to record Joe and Sam's planned trip back up the Matterhorn in the summer of 2025 and back up El Capitan with Sylvan later in 2025. He shares his hope that the film will awaken the culture to begin discussing masculine formation.
