(15 Jan 2022) Crowds of protesters blocked roads on the Serbian side of a border crossing with Bosnia on Saturday in a demonstration against plans to mine for lithium in Serbia.
They gathered at the Loznica border post, waving banners and blowing whistles as they blocked traffic from moving in the area.
Other protesters halted traffic on the main north-south highway in Belgrade.
Environmental groups want the government to rule out lithium mining in western Serbia following proposals from mining giant Rio Tinto to launch a $2.4 billion operation in the country.
Last month plans to allow the firm to operate a lithium mine were suspended following nationwide protests.
Activists have pledged to press on until their demands are met and Rio Tinto leaves Serbia.
