A hazardous area is defined as:

An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is present, or may be expected to be present, in quantities such as to require special precautions for the construction, installation and use of apparatus.

A method of zoning plant, according to the likelihood of a flammable atmosphere being present

Zone 0
An area in which an explosive atmosphere present continuously or for a long period or frequently
Typically found in the space above a liquid in a mixing vat or storage tank or vessel

Zone 1
An area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally
Areas immediately around storage tank vent pipe openings which vent during filling
Area around mixing vessel which has lid opened regularly but not left open. During open period flammable gas may escape
Area around bearings/seals of pumps which through wear may leak flammable vapour

Zone 2
An area in which an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only
Areas within plant which contains flammable material, area surrounding zone 1

Non hazardous Area
An area associated with a plant which is designated free from flammable materials and atmospheres
