In this sermon, the fourth in an eight-part series based on the Old Testament book of Daniel, Dr. Michael Youssef teaches from Daniel chapters 5:1–6:13. Beginning with chapter 5, the story of the downfall of Belshazzar and the entire Babylonian Kingdom after the so-called “writing on the wall.” Dr. Youssef enumerates three things that will always prepare you for any situation, based on Daniel’s experience: 1) he had a character trait of absolute integrity; 2) he had complete confidence in Yahweh; and 3) he had the Word of God hidden in his heart. He also challenges us with three questions: 1) What word does God say to the non-believing world around you through you? 2) What word would God put in your mouth to speak to the scoffers in our schools and in our workplaces? 3) How can God use you and use me in the place where He has placed us? Because when we speak the truth, God is speaking through us to the same culture that Daniel spoke to. Dr. Youssef also highlights three principles from his heart as a pastor to illuminate for us what it means for God’s light to shine in the world, all embodied by Daniel and his friends. Moving on to chapter 6, Dr. Youssef sets the scene for the Chaldeans’ plot to be rid of Daniel that begins with a decree that for 30 days no one should pray to anyone but Darius, which shows us through Daniel’s response that spiritual consistency allows us to live a life of full and effective service for God. Daily spiritual discipline is the foundation that carries through all the days of our life. And when you are daily connected with the God of heaven, the God of power and might, as Daniel was, there is nothing that will shake our faith or break our resolve—even the threat of a den of lions.
