David Kilderry will explore dozens of Melbourne’s fondly remembered suburban cinemas that closed during the 1950s to the 1980s era. Richly illustrated with images from both the authors collection and those from other rarely seen collections, he’ll examine former picture palaces, fleapits, and suburban twins and discuss the films they ran, who operated them and the reasons for their closure. It’s not all bad news, however, many old cinemas from previous decades have not only survived but prospered. Others sat out of use for decades before being re-imagined as theatres again in recent years. He’ll also examine why they have survived when so many others haven’t.
