In environmental news, an American study concludes that safeguarding rainforests assists in improving livelihoods of local community members. Dr. Paul J. Ferraro, Associate Professor of Economics at Georgia State University, and colleagues, examined the effect over time which the establishment of parks and reserves in Costa Rica and Thailand had on the disadvantaged living nearby. The findings suggest that the conservation of areas rich in biodiversity helps to increase economic opportunities for local residents because of tourism and better infrastructure such as new roads. The results of the research have been published in the prestigious journal "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America." Our thankfulness, Dr. Paul J.
