The Archaeological Site of Eleusis

As one of the most important sacred centers of the ancient world, Eleusis was home to the Eleusinian Mysteries, the most famous religious rite in ancient Athens. The fame of the Eleusinian Mysteries had spread to the then known world. Men, women, slaves, foreigners and children would gather in the sanctuary of Eleusis to worship the Demeter, the goddess of nature’s renewal, agriculture and the harvest. Today, the imposing Archaeological Site defines the center of modern Eleusis and is accessible to both visitors and locals.

Στην Ελευσίνα, ένα από τα σημαντικότερα ιερά κέντρα του αρχαίου κόσμου, λάμβαναν χώρα τα Ελευσίνια Μυστήρια, το κορυφαίο γεγονός λατρείας στην Αρχαία Αθήνα, η φήμη του οποίου εξαπλωνόταν στον τότε γνωστό κόσμο. Άνδρες, γυναίκες, δούλοι, ξένοι και παιδιά συνέρρεαν στο ιερό της Ελευσίνας για να λατρέψουν τη θεά Δήμητρα, τη θεά της ανανέωσης της φύσης, της γεωργίας και της συγκομιδής. Σήμερα ο επιβλητικός Αρχαιολογικός Χώρος ορίζει το κέντρο της σύγχρονης Ελευσίνας και είναι προσβάσιμος σε επισκέπτες και Ελευσίνιους.
