Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Leong Mun Wai on Tuesday (Feb 6) asked Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam about a case where a police officer killed himself after alleging workplace bullying, racial discrimination and unfair treatment after reportedly whistleblowing in the Singapore Police Force.

Mr Leong asked if a "better way to clear the air" would be to appoint a committee of inquiry (COI) rather than conduct an internal investigation by the police force.

In response, Mr Shanmugam said there needs to be consideration for trust in the police. "You put officers through this every time there is an allegation, public enquiries - what are you really saying? That they will be put out there, hung out to dry regardless of the facts? And you ask yourself: You think more people are going to join the police force? Is that good for Singapore?"

He added: "Bottom line is, do we trust the police force? Do we trust the Internal Affairs Office? Why do you think 90% of Singaporeans have trust in the police force?"
