If you have throat tension, you likely hear a pinched sound when you play, especially when playing something with larger interval leaps. If it gets bad enough, you may start to leak air through your nose (called a "Palatal Leak") which is a REALLY bad habit to get into.

A perfect example of this sort of tension is when you play Beethoven 6th symphony's clarinet-excerpt-from-hell.
