A controllable pitch propeller (CPP) allows for the adjustment of the angle of its blades, known as the pitch, to optimize performance and efficiency. This is achieved by changing the blade angle through a mechanism in the hub, which improves maneuverability and allows the engine to operate at a constant speed while the vessel's speed and direction are changed. CPPs are used in a variety of applications, including ships like tugs, ferries, and icebreakers, where precise control is essential.

How it works

Blade angle adjustment: The CPP's blades can be rotated around their long axis to change their angle.

Forward and reverse thrust: Adjusting the pitch allows the propeller to generate thrust in both forward and reverse directions by changing the angle of the blades.

Maneuvering: The pitch can be inverted from ahead to astern for a smooth, rapid transition to reverse without a "dead time".

Engine efficiency: By changing the blade pitch, the propeller's load can be adjusted, allowing the engine to run at a constant, efficient speed regardless of the vessel's speed or load.

Mechanical actuation: A common method for changing the pitch is through hydraulic systems, where hydraulic fluid moves a piston. This linear motion is converted into the rotary motion of the propeller blades via a connection like a "yoke" at the blade's root.
