Looking to get started shaving your head? Or are you a veteran head shaver and looking to pick up some tips or new hardware? You're in the right place!

STEP 1 -- PREPARE
I usually shave in the shower, where my skin is naturally ready to receive a shave. But if you shave outside the shower, make sure to take some time and prepare your skin with a hot towel to open up your pores and soften your hair. Now, if shaving at the sink, the water in your hair will evaporate quickly, so some people like to apply a thin layer of Shave Oil to help lock in that moisture while you complete your shave.

Next, whip up a firm lather of soap. You can shave with almost anything in a pinch, but I personally enjoy using a shave bar like Leaf Shave Bar. Shave bars are specially formulated soap bars that are intended to lather easily, thickly, hold and maintain a cushion, and rinse off without stripping away your skin's natural oils. You want to leave your skin happy and hydrated after shaving your head.

You can lather your bar using any shave bowl or brush you have handy. No need to spend a lot of money there. Just remember: patience is key. There can be a big difference in 30 seconds vs. 90 seconds of whipping up the lather.

STEP 2 -- SHAVE
I start my shave at the very front of my hairline, and I follow the contour of my head back, working one side, then the other. My first pass is always front-to-back, using minimal pressure. The weighted handle and spring-action will keep the blades engaged and gliding smoothly.

This process means that I’m going “against the grain” up top, “with the grain” down the back, and “across the grain” on the sides. This naturally happens because our hair grows in different directions at different parts of the head.

As needed, rinse out the soap and hair.

Look, I love a good bald head. I think anyone, guy or girl, that rocks a bald head is stepping out with a certain confidence that I appreciate and celebrate. Hey, if this is your first time – don’t fear the shave! You’re going to LOVE it.

My hair is pretty tough and wiry on the side and back, so I will usually re-lather and make another pass against the grain in those spots for the ultra-close, smooth shave.

The Ears are tricky of course, but they’re only tricky if you’re stubborn. Take your free hand and just pin your ear down when shave above it, the razor will glide over this area; next pin it to the side when shaving behind. This opens up space for your razor to fit -- easy!

This may take you a couple of shaves to get a good feel for, but once you do you can rock and roll through all the tough spots.

I use my free hand to feel for any spots that need an extra buffing pass, and make that happen until I’m satisfied.

STEP 3 -- SHAVING IS SKINCARE
Once you’re done shaving, don’t forget to care for your skin. I personally prefer the Leaf Calming Serum. This is a super-light finishing oil that’s designed to calm skin, re-introduce moisture and hydration, and reduce feelings of razor burn if you’re prone to that. Just a few drops goes a long way. I take 30 seconds and really massage this into my scalp. I love this oil, other folks enjoy a toner to finish. You’ll quickly find what’s right for you.

If you’re new to shaving your head I want you to feel confident in that decision. Don’t be afraid. It’s fresh, it feels good, and I know your friends are going to love it.

If you’re a veteran head shaver, and looking for some new tricks up your sleeve - I hope you check out the equipment I featured today. The Leaf razor changed my head-shaving game and I just LOVE introducing my “colleagues” to it.

Happy Shaving
