What is diagnostic coding?

Why is it important?

A diagnostic code is a set of alphanumeric characters that are used to describe conditions and illnesses on healthcare claims.

It is important because payers use them to process healthcare claims.

If it is coded incorrectly it will delay the processing of a claim and result in a denial of the claim or a reduced payment of the claim.

So, if coded incorrectly it will reduce the money coming into the practice.
