The rounded, peaty hills of Dumfries, located two hours away from Glasgow on Scotland’s southern border, form the setting for the Garden of Cosmic Speculation. When Charles Jencks and his wife, Maggie Keswick, moved into this 18th-century manor, a peaceful castle in the heart of the British countryside, nothing presaged its incredible transformation. Charles Jencks is an architect and Maggie Keswick is a landscape designer; he is a student of postmodernism, and she is an expert in Chinese gardening.

From their love story was born a new kind of landscape.
