(0:10) Okay so, this is part 3 of our series on how to become an attorney. So, we already have what you have to do to get into law school, we have what do to when you are in law school,
(0:20) now you graduated from law school, you go to graduation, and you have a great time, only to find out that you have to take now the dreaded Bar test, actually to become
(0:30) an attorney, to be a practicing attorney. And that is usually held at the end of July. So basically, you graduate in the middle of May, and you have about 2 months or so. I have seen people that after
(0:40) graduation go on vacation, that is not the time to go on vacation. You should schedule your vacations for around August 1st. because now you need to spend the next 2 months
(0:50) preparing for this Bar test. And this is similar to the advice I gave you for the first year of law school. Whatever drama you got going on when everything is taking place, you need to concentrate on studying for that Bar because
(1:00) this is how you become an attorney. Now, you pass the Bar, congratulations, everything is great. Now what do you do? So, I can tell you that after being through all of that,
(1:10) undergrad, 3 years of law school, taking the bar, you still don’t know sh*t, believe it or not. And you may come out of law school and think I graduated at the top of my class, you still don’t know sh*t
(1:20) or you graduated at the bottom of your class, you still don’t know sh*t. Okay because now you need to come out to the real world as an attorney, and now you need to start practicing. And what should you do first?
(1:30) What you should do first is you should try to get as much experience as you can. You need to now dig into the workplace. Don’t just concentrate on how much money can I make first.
(1:40) Money will come. Success will come, but you need to learn your craft. It is important for you to get as much experience as you can. Most attorneys will spend the
(1:50) first 2 or 3 years at a particular place learning how to actually become an attorney, to see if what they are learning is something they like.
(2:00) It may not be. The greatest thing about being an attorney is you can switch in between the types of attorneys. I’ve always said, you can go to school to become a foot doctor,
(2:10) you are not going to be able to become a hand doctor. But, having a law degree gives you the flexibility to be able to say, “hey you know I went to school; I thought I wanted to be a criminal defense attorney, turns out I don’t like that.” “Hey, I want to be a family lawyer now.”
(2:20) Or “hey I want to go into corporate law”. The greatest thing about having a law degree is having the ability to switch in between
(2:30) the different types of law. And that is very important for a career. This is why I recommend everyone to become an attorney. So, the best advice I can give you is, when you come out as an attorney,
(2:40) you have your reputation, and that is really all you have as an attorney. It is important that you do a good job. This is your trade, this is your future, this is exactly what you are doing and what
(2:50) you have worked so hard to get to where you are. It is important that you do the best you can, and to learn as much as you can. This advice is for someone coming out of law school.
(3:00) Your first couple years and what you should do. Everything will fall into line. By the time you get to that 3rd, 4th, 5th year, you’ll look back
(3:10) on your original years right out of law school and say oh my god, I really didn’t know sh*t. I’m Enrique Latoison, your 3-minute lawyer. During the bar, all you should do is like I did,
(3:20) Eat pizza, study, and have lots of ***.
