Behind the Facade – Stories of Everyday Exclusion at JNU


Together for Inclusion (an initiative of PDSU) successfully organised an experience-sharing session outside SSS-2, with strong participation from PwD students. While more participation from non-PwD students was expected. the session underlined a crucial reality: building an inclusive and accessible campus is the responsibility of the entire student community, not PwD students alone.

PwD students shared powerful lived experiences of exclusion on campus—many deeply emotional, some shared with humour—revealing everyday barriers to academic and social life. A major issue repeatedly raised was the non-functioning of lifts during evening hours and the absence of audio floor announcements, a basic and easily solvable accessibility concern.

This session marked the beginning of a sustained collective struggle for access and dignity. As an immediate step, on 3rd December 2025, International day of Persons with Disability, Together for Inclusion will mobilise and collectively submit a memorandum to the Dean of Students demanding urgent action on making the lift accessible 24x7 with functional audio announcement system. Our only strength is our unity, and with it we move forward towards a just, inclusive, and accessible education system for all.
