According to the original design, the chimney was slightly smaller than that of the W1. The W3 engine is also the only hydraulic engine that can be used in Chinese cabins.

In terms of driving, these engines are generally lightweight and can run on any railway line in the country, including Kelani Valley and Matale. It is also often used for rail transport (sleeper transport, etc.).

The noise generated by the engine during the operation of these engines is slightly higher than that of the original W1 engines. It is also said that the lifespan of these W3 engines is coming to an end. The warranty period for these was 10 years from the date of repair. Therefore, by the year 2008, the relevant companies had recommended that these be referred for significant major repairs. However, 9 of these W3 engines are still running, and only the 636 engine has been removed from service due to the destruction of the power engine frame.
