The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is Europe’s largest and most inclusive network of environmental citizens’ organisations. We bring together over 180 member organisations from 40 countries, representing 30 million individual supporters. We stand for sustainable development, environmental justice & participatory democracy. We tackle Europe’s most pressing environmental problems by agenda setting, monitoring, advising on and influencing the way the EU and its member states deal with these issues.

2024 is a crucial year for the EEB and the environmental movement. It will be marked by the elections to the European Parliament in June. The outcomes are going to decide on the future of the European Green Deal: will Europe step up its game and put in place the transformative policies needed to achieve carbon neutrality, circularity, zero pollution, and the protection and restoration of nature? Is Europe living up to its values by standing up for global justice and equity in the transition? Are divisive positions and short-sighted plans gaining more influence – or will citizens and their newly elected leaders rally behind the joint objective of a just transition to a sustainable future?

And there are not only elections in the EU and member states such as Belgium: some of the world’s most influential countries including the US and India are choosing new political leaders – which can also turn the tide for climate and environment in one or the other direction. Is the EU ready to be the frontrunner of the transition towards living well within the ecological limits of the planet?

Finally, 2024 is also a historic year for the EEB itself: Europe’s largest environmental federation will turn 50 – making it one of the oldest civil society networks active in EU policymaking. This will be an opportunity to look back at 50 years of European environmental policies and past achievements, to reflect and to learn to tackle our current challenges for a future where people and nature strive together.
