Die Kieler Altstadt ist der historische Ursprung der Stadt und liegt unmittelbar an der Kieler Förde. Bereits im 13. Jahrhundert wurde hier die Stadtgründung durch Graf Adolf IV. von Schauenburg vollzogen. Trotz schwerer Zerstörungen im Zweiten Weltkrieg und der damit verbundenen großflächigen Neubebauung bewahrt die Altstadt einige markante Orte ihrer Vergangenheit. Der Alte Markt bildet das Herzstück des Stadtteils, an dem sich früher das Rathaus und viele bedeutende Bürgerhäuser befanden. Heute stehen hier unter anderem die Nikolaikirche, Kiels ältestes erhaltenes Gebäude aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, und das Denkmal für den Reformator Hans Tausen. Auch die Dänische Straße erinnert mit ihrem Kopfsteinpflaster und den erhaltenen Fassaden an das alte Kiel. Die Nähe zum Hafen prägte die Altstadt über Jahrhunderte wirtschaftlich und kulturell. Hier entstanden Werften, Kaufmannshäuser und Handelsbeziehungen, die Kiel zu einer wichtigen Ostseehafenstadt machten. Das Kieler Schloss, einst Residenz dänischer Könige und heute Veranstaltungsort, ist ein weiteres zentrales Bauwerk der Altstadt. Auch moderne Einrichtungen wie das Schifffahrtsmuseum schlagen eine Brücke zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Die heutige Altstadt ist ein lebendiges Viertel mit Cafés, kleinen Geschäften und kulturellen Angeboten, das in seiner Struktur sowohl historische Tiefe als auch urbane Lebendigkeit vereint. Trotz ihrer überschaubaren Größe bleibt sie ein bedeutender Ort der Stadtidentität.
Kiel’s Old Town is the historic heart of the city and lies directly on the Kiel Fjord. It was here in the 13th century that Count Adolf IV of Schauenburg founded the city. Although much of the Old Town was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in the postwar era, several key landmarks of Kiel’s past remain. The Old Market (Alter Markt) is the centerpiece, once home to the city hall and grand merchant houses. Today, it features St. Nicholas' Church, Kiel’s oldest surviving building dating back to the 13th century, and a monument to the reformer Hans Tausen. Dänische Straße, with its cobblestone paving and preserved facades, recalls the character of old Kiel. The Old Town’s close connection to the harbor has shaped it economically and culturally for centuries, as shipyards, trade houses, and maritime businesses established Kiel as a significant Baltic port. Kiel Castle, once the residence of Danish kings and now a venue for cultural events, is a central landmark of the Old Town. The nearby Maritime Museum helps connect the city’s history with its present. Today’s Old Town is a lively neighborhood featuring cafés, small shops, and cultural offerings. While compact in size, it remains a key symbol of Kiel’s urban identity, blending historical significance with everyday city life.
