Trains on the Norfolk Southern Virginia Division - Spring 2016 Part 2

"Trains on the Norfolk Southern Virginia Division - Spring 2016 Part 2" includes video coverage from the Blue Ridge District near Roanoke, over the famed mountain grade for which the line was named. Although during this time the Virginia District was absorbed into the Pocahontas, I decided to keep the titles under the previous name (as we're no where near Bluefield!). The CPL signals have since been replaced by Safetran gantries. The videos were shot on March 19 and 20, 2016. The locations in the video are shown on the map.

Dynamic brake fans whine as 189 cruises down grade in the rain through the Webster CPL's.

March 20, 2016
Early next morning, 22A heads west up the grade, splitting the 241 automatic CPL's.

4:45 - Just barely beating the train to Webster, 22A gains track speed coming down the grade.

At Villamont, 234 starts to descent the grade splitting the CPL's. Note the fouled Leslie horn on the leader.

Near the summit, auto/intermodal train 29G passes under an old steel girder bridge that is a common sight in the southeastern United States.

The local guardian dog watches over his share of the Norfolk & Western as 189 climbing the grade breaks the silence at Villamont.

Our trip to the N&W would end with 188 climbing the grade, splitting the famed automatics at 246.
