The Artisanal gold mining sector (ASGM) in West Africa is fraught with complexities and faces significant challenges, notably pervasive informality, rendering it vulnerable to criminal exploitation and hindering development potential. Previous attempts to address informal ASGM in West Africa have often taken a punitive approach involving crackdowns. In this video, I/we explore alternative methods that may better assist states in harnessing the full potential of the gold mining sector beyond crackdowns.
I/We conclude that there is a need to move away from crackdowns on ASGM and towards alternative response frameworks.
