Title: Marriage, Divorce & Remarriage – A Biblical Perspective with Cultural Context
Speaker: Ps. Mike Humberstone
Date Preached: 23 June 2025
Church: The Open Church, Perth, Western Australia

What does the Bible truly say about marriage, divorce, and remarriage?
This sermon dares to move beyond tradition, shame, and surface theology. It goes deep—into Scripture, Jewish tradition, covenantal thinking, and the voice of Jesus Himself. Many churches either avoid this topic or weaponise it. We did neither. This message is a call to restoration.
In a society shaped by broken trust, devalued vows, and increasing confusion around what marriage is meant to be, Jesus calls us back to the beginning. To Genesis. To eḥad—the indivisible union of two lives, fused together not just by vows, but by covenant.
Jesus doesn’t sidestep the pain. He enters it. He confronts legalism. He lifts the broken. He restores what was misused. In Matthew 5:31–32, and again in Matthew 19:3–9, He challenges both the liberal and legalistic interpretations of His day—pointing to a higher standard: God’s original design for marriage.
⸻
💬 Key themes covered in this message:
🔹 The Hebrew concept of eḥad – “oneness” as covenantal fusion, not just emotional or physical union
🔹 A look at Deuteronomy 24 and how Moses’ permission for divorce was a concession, not a command
🔹 The two major first-century Jewish schools: Hillel (permitting divorce for any reason) and Shammai (permitting it only for sexual immorality)
🔹 Jesus’ radical return to God’s original intention: reconciliation, not loopholes
🔹 The cultural and covenantal implications of porneia as more than just sexual sin—an act of covenantal betrayal
🔹 The biblical grounds for separation and remarriage—including Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 7
🔹 The difference between sin and consequences, grace and patterns, restoration and permissiveness
⸻
📖 Scriptures explored:
• Genesis 2:24 – “The two shall become one flesh” (eḥad)
• Deuteronomy 24:1–4 – Moses’ divorce allowance
• Matthew 5:31–32; Matthew 19:3–9 – Jesus’ teaching on divorce
• 1 Corinthians 7 – Paul’s instructions for married and separated believers
• Exodus 21:10–11 – the rights of a wife: food, clothing, and marital intimacy
⸻
🎯 Who is this message for?
✔️ Those walking through divorce or separation
✔️ Those who feel condemned by past decisions
✔️ Those seeking clarity on biblical grounds for marriage and remarriage

🕊️ The Spirit of this message is not to condemn, but to bring clarity and healing.
Jesus knew that behind every legal question is a human story. This sermon invites us to drop the stones of judgment and take up the ministry of reconciliation. There is a path to healing. There is life beyond divorce. There is freedom from shame. There is restoration for the soul who wants to walk in truth again.

💬 Final word from Ps. Mike:
“The Church must speak to the realities people are living in, not just the ideals we wish they held. But we must do so with grace, courage, and the full truth of the gospel. Marriage is holy. Divorce is painful. But redemption is still possible.”
