After the apparent suicide of her husband James, Harper Marlowe decides to spend her holiday alone in the Hertfordshire village of Cotson. Flashbacks reveal that Harper, tired of James' emotional abuse and manipulation, intended to divorce him, leading James to threaten her with suicide. After punching Harper in the face, James immediately tried to apologize, but Harper angrily locked him out of the apartment. She then witnessed him fall from an upstairs balcony and die when he was partially impaled on a fence.
Arriving at the country house she is renting, Harper is greeted by its eccentric but well-meaning owner, Geoffrey, who gives her a tour of the house. Harper later goes for a walk in a nearby forest and comes across a disused railway tunnel. At the other end, a human figure starts screaming and runs towards her. Terrified, Harper runs back through the woods until she reaches an open field. She turns back to take a picture of the landscape on her phone and notices a naked man standing in the distance as he watches her eerily.
The next day, during a video call with her friend Riley, Harper spots the same naked man in the front garden with his face covered in bloody scratches, which further worries her. Realizing that the front door is slightly open, Harper quickly closes and locks it, but the naked man puts his hand through the letterbox. Harper calls the police and the man is arrested, with one of the arresting officers recognizing Geoffrey.
Harper visits a church where the scriptures have images of the Green Man and Sheela carved into the gig. Outside, he meets a young boy and a vicar, both of whom take the form of Geoffrey. After the boy leaves, Harper discusses James' death with the vicar, who suggests that she is partly responsible for James' death because she did not allow him to apologize. Enraged, Harper leaves and later goes to a local pub where she meets Geoffrey again. The few patrons and bartender wear Geoffrey's look. Shortly after, his police lookalike arrives, informing Harper that the naked man has been released as there is no legal reason to keep him in custody, much to her dismay.
Upset by the recent events, Harper contacts Riley, who offers to drive to the village in the morning to accompany Harper for the rest of her vacation. As Harper tries to type Riley's address, her cell phone keeps cutting off. He sees a police officer outside, but when the lights flash, he disappears. One of the pub's patrons then appears and chases Harper, who retreats into the house. As she armed herself with a knife, the kitchen window was broken. Geoffrey arrives and discovers that the window was broken because of a crow, which he then kills by breaking its neck.
As Geoffrey walks into the garden, the lights flash again and a naked man appears, chasing Harper back into the house. When he reaches through the mailbox and grabs Harper's hand, she stabs him in the arm. He pulls his arm out and the stuck knife rips his arm open in an extreme injury similar to the one James suffered in the fall. A boy and a vicar appear in the house in turn, each of them now similarly injured. When the vicar tries to rape Harper, she stabs him in the stomach and flees the house.
While trying to escape, Harper accidentally runs over Geoffrey. He aggressively pulls Harper out of her car, takes control of it, and chases after her before crashing into a stone wall. The naked man, now in full green man form, approaches Harper, his ankle now badly broken, matching the other injury on James' corpse. A naked man gives birth to a young boy, who in turn gives birth to a vicar, then Geoffrey, and finally James, severely mutilating their bodies. Both Harper and James are sitting on the couch inside the house. When Harper asks him what he wants from her, James replies that he wants her love. Riley - who is pregnant - arrives at the house in the morning. He follows the trail of blood and finds Harper, who smiles when she sees her.
