John, through a very serendipitous encounter, communicated with the owner of the Caruthers's archive and was given permission to share these remarkable images. Caruthers made water color paintings of locomotives, built by Baldwin, Norris and other manufacturers for the Pennsylvania RR in the 1850's and 1860's. These images answer many questions, if not most, about the color schemes used to paint and color locomotives into the latter part of the 19th century.
