Button shedding is a major problem in coconut farming.Let's see about factors influencing button shedding and control measures.
FACTORS INFLUENCING BUTTON SHEDDING:
Shedding of buttons and premature is a serious infestation of coconut, caused by many factors including excess acidity or alkalinity, poor drainage facilities, severe and prolonged drought, genetic disorders, insufficient nutrients, hormone deficiency, insect pests or poor
management practices. Though it is caused mainly due to the inefficient or improper pollination due to low population of carrier insects. This phenomenon is characterized by the presence of fallen buttons below coconut trees.
“Button shedding causes severe loss to our farms. If you'd take an affected tree, it's leaves would appear in saffron color. Among a farm of 100 trees, almost 4-5 trees are being noted of this problem. Usually farmers might not take this as a big issue. But eventually the disease will start to take over the trees one by one and thereby taking down the entire farm within months.”
CONTROL MEASURES:
In order to prevent button shedding, apply 200 grams of Boron and
3 kilograms of Potash to every single tree annually. Maintain the soil pH level within 8.5, as button shedding increases beyond the limit. Also apply 250 grams of Zinc Sulfate annually for every tree. The lack of adequate pollination and drought like condition with further aggravate the problems.

Also ensure that, enough water supply is given to the trees under dry time periods and conditions.
