About the preservation of Fort Ord and what the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps Historical Preservation Group is doing - Greg Krenzelok (In response to a viewer question (Betty)

Hi Betty – Since 2008 I have been working on the preservation of the Fort Ord Station Veterinary Hospital (U.S. Army Horse and Veterinarians 1941) located at the City of Marina’s Equestrian Center. And in the process, I started documenting Monterey’s U.S. Army Horse history at the Presidio of Monterey, Camp Ord/East Garrison (Fort Ord National Monument), Fort Ord’s Main Garrison, and beyond. I have left no stone unturned. I knew from my previous research that places like Fort Ord get lost when the buildings come down and progress moves in, to the point where you didn’t know where it was. Using aerial maps, I have tried to outline key areas. This has been a huge undertaking and I have only been able to cover the early Presidio of Monterey’s history up to WW2 and Main Garrison’s and Camp Ord/East Garrison’s history from its start to WW2. I have an extensive collection that documents the U.S. Army’s Horse Soldier history of the area. When I first started my research there was a lot of talk about doing this and that and preserving the Fort Ord history, but very little has happened. But I want you to know that ever since I started working on this research the goal has been to start a museum. Please realize I can’t cover the whole extensive history of Fort Ord, but I am working on a small part of it. Very soon now the last of the 700 Series buildings from WW2 will be coming down and progress moving in. After all these years the City of Marina and it’s mayor are getting very close to making the museum a reality. We were able to get the Fort Ord Station Veterinary Hospital on the National Register of Historic Places, the first of the Fort Ord buildings to get this status. It takes a lot of work and funding to do projects like this. Hopefully, in the near future, we will open that museum, it will be located at the City of Marina’s Equestrian Center. Below are just a few links to my Fort Ord research. Don’t’ forget to follow the links within each website for more great Fort Ord History. Please get involved! – Greg Krenzelok
