So what’s the difference between stainless and aluminum boat props?

In this video from Boats.net, John will guide you through the pros and cons of aluminum props and stainless props. In a nutshell, the biggest difference between aluminum and stainless steel props can be found in the strength and rigidity of the material. On a smaller boat, with less horsepower, an aluminum prop will work fine. Its light weight is a nice fit for the lower power of the engine.

But on a larger boat, with more horsepower that can literally bend the blades of an aluminum prop and change the pitch, you want the benefits of a steel prop. It cuts through the water with lower drag and won’t flex under the power of a bigger outboard.

The aluminum prop is cheaper, and if cost is a consideration it’s hard to beat. On the other hand, you may be looking for the crisp power transfer to the water that comes with a stainless steel prop.
