PR18 Levada do Rei walk behind a waterfall!

PR18 Levada do Rei walk seemed like the perfect trail to complete on our final day as it's not too long and whilst not unusual for Madeira Levada walks, the trail was virtually flat. This meant perspirating would be lower, and therefore the passenger I'd be sat next to later on the flight home probably wouldn't be quite so grossed out by me! From a flowers point of view, I'd say the Levada do Rei hike follows one of the prettiest Madeira levadas as the range of flora at the start is phenomenal and the wild crocosmias continue for kilometres into the levada walk. Sections go through Laurisilva forest and the end point is where the Levada do Rei trail meets the Ribeiro Bonito - it's main water source. One of the very cool things about this levada walk is you walk behind a waterfall and this one was quite powerful, even in summer, so we got wet like we'd briefly been caught in a rain shower. The trail head is closest to São Jorge, Madeira but also not too far from Santana, Maderia either. Parking on the roadside is free. As this is an easy Madeira levada walk, you should be able to complete it in half or day or less and there's a restaurant at the trail head should you wish to eat there before or after.
